How Often Should You Seek Out Regular Dental Care and Dental Checkups?

Routine Dental Care Fort Lauderdale, FL

Dentists recommend getting dental care treatments and check-ups at least two times a year. It is a standard set by the American Dental Association. Regular trips to a clinic ensure any oral issues you develop are detected and treated early on. That saves you lots of money in the long run, and it can help you to avoid the excruciating pain caused by severely decayed teeth or infection.

The importance of regular dental care treatments

Regular dental care treatments provide preventative benefits that help to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Teeth cleanings are the most used preventative treatment, and they are used to remove plaque and tartar from teeth surfaces. Both house oral bacteria and the acids they produce, but, unlike plaque, tartar cannot be removed by brushing or flossing.

A metal scaler is used to remove these hard deposits during teeth cleaning. Getting tartar off teeth provides benefits like improving the way teeth look since tartar gives teeth a yellow color. Tartar also protects teeth against the two most common dental issues: tooth decay and gum disease.

Getting teeth cleaned at least two times each year is recommended to ensure tartar deposits of teeth are periodically removed before they can cause tooth decay or gum disease. Other important dental care treatments performed during routine dental appointment include:

  • Fluoride treatments: Fluoride treatments are used to treat issues like teeth sensitivity and the de-mineralization stage of tooth decay. It can also be used as a preventative treatment that protects teeth against tooth decay. Fluoride treatments only take a couple of minutes to administer. It involves biting down on a mouth tray filled with a fluoride product for one or two minutes
  • Dental sealants: A dental sealant can protect a tooth from decay for over three years. It is a rubbery material that is painted on the tooth being treated. It creates a barrier that prevents oral bacteria and the acids they produce from reaching the tooth. Dental sealants are often recommended for the molars of children who are still developing good oral hygiene habits. It can be used on any tooth that is vulnerable to tooth decay
  • Fillings: Fillings are the standard way to address cavities. These are tiny holes caused by tooth decay and they will continuously expand until they lead to the tooth breaking apart or becoming infected. Fillings can be used to close up these holes, preventing acids in the mouth from expanding further
  • Teeth whitening: Teeth whitening is the most commonly performed cosmetic treatment in dentistry. This is not surprising, since teeth are often in contact with things that stain and discolor them like cigarette smoke or the tannins in foods/beverages like red wine. Teeth whitening treatments work on most types of stains and one treatment is enough to drastically improve the color of their patient’s teeth. People who are happy with their smiles are more likely to take good care of their mouth
