A dental laboratory fabricates dental crowns. The laboratory technicians will design a dental crown based on impressions supplied by the dentist. The custom-made crown fits firmly on the implant and fills the space left by the missing tooth. A single dental appointment is typically needed to place the crown, but a prior visit is necessary to obtain the dental impressions.
The dentist will usually install a temporary crown onto the dental implant before the laboratory completes the production of the permanent crown. Before placing the permanent crown, the temporary crown must be taken off. The dentist may sometimes use a local anesthetic before removing the temporary crown. The crown, along with any remnants of dental cement, will be removed by the dentist.
The dentist will verify whether the new crown fits correctly before securely fastening it in place. The dentist may perform some flossing on the area, and the patient may be asked to bite down on carbon paper to check the bite alignment. If the implant crown requires additional adjustment, the dentist will modify it until they are satisfied with the fit. Patients will also need to double-check and test their bite to see whether they are satisfied with the new dental crown's look and feel.
At this point, the dentist will permanently seal the implant crown. An attachment option is to fill the dental crown with dental cement and place it over the implant. It often takes a couple of minutes for the cement to harden. The dentist will wipe off any excess cement and reexamine the bite. If the dentist opts for the screw-retainment method, they will screw the dental crown over the abutment until it is securely in place. Screwed-in crowns are more readily detachable than cement-retained crowns.
Depending on the attachment mechanism employed, the dentist will offer aftercare recommendations after installing the implant crown. Since certain forms of dental cement take hours to cure, the dentist may advise waiting at least a day before using the dental crown. The dentist will urge the patient to check their bite the next day after the cement has completely set and the numbness has disappeared. If the patient's bite seems off, they will need to return to the dental office to get an adjustment.
