To fit CEREC crowns over affected teeth, preparatory work is necessary. The dentist begins by numbing the patient’s mouth. Once the patient is comfortable, the dentist will reshape the tooth so that the crown will fit. To do this, the dentist will shave part of the tooth away.
Instead of making a mold out of dental plaster, the dentist will take a 3-D picture for CEREC crowns. These images go to a computer program, which will create a model of the patient’s mouth. The model renders what the tooth reconstruction will look like. From here, the crown can be made.
Unlike a traditional crown, which takes weeks until it is ready, CEREC crowns are available within an hour. The digital model goes to a milling machine in the office. This device then makes the crown out of a ceramic block. It will make the crown look just like natural teeth, including the size and shape. The dentist or an assistant will take the crown and paint it the desired color.
The dentist takes the CEREC crowns and cements them over the affected teeth. The dentist will also check the person’s bite to make sure the crowns are a good fit. Some adjustments may be necessary. The dentist will follow up with the patient in a few weeks to make sure the crowns are intact and working well.
