Cosmetic Dental Reasons for Dental Bonding

Cosmetic Dental Care Fort Lauderdale, FL

Dental bonding is used for various cosmetic dental reasons, such as damaged or discolored teeth. This guide will provide an overview of the different reasons people undergo dental bonding, the pros, and cons, and even how to take care of your teeth.

What is dental bonding?

Also called tooth bonding, it is a cosmetic dental procedure that utilizes a soft resin to fix problems with your teeth, including gaps, cracks, discoloration, and even misshapen teeth. Your dentist will color-match the resin to your teeth to restore your smile as subtly as possible. When applying the resin to your teeth, your dentist will first use an adhesive; then, they will mold the resin on top of it to fix any imperfections with your teeth. Lastly, they will cure the resin with UV light, then polish it to touch it up.

Pros of dental bonding

There are many good reasons to undergo dental bonding. As we have mentioned, the procedure can help with a variety of minor cosmetic dental ailments. This can help to improve your confidence in your smile and your quality of life. It is also a quick and easy procedure that usually only requires a single trip to the dentist that lasts less than an hour. It’s non-invasive, painless, and often doesn’t even require anesthesia.

The recovery after the procedure is also minimal, as you can eat and drink immediately afterward. It’s inexpensive for dental work, usually ranging between $100 and $400 per tooth. The exact cost will vary depending upon how extensive the cosmetic repair is. It’s important to note that very extensive dental bonding can be significantly more expensive.

Cons of dental bonding

Although dental bonding is an excellent option for most people, there are, unfortunately, a few potential downsides to it. The resin can be stained over time by consistent smoking, coffee drinking, or through other foods and drinks such as wine. It also does not last forever and will need to be replaced within 3 to 10 years after the procedure.

How to take care of your teeth after the procedure

As we have mentioned, dental bonding doesn’t last forever. Therefore, it’s important to take good care of your teeth to preserve bonding for as long as possible and minimize future trips to the dentist. The number one way to protect your bonding is to keep your teeth healthy and clean by regularly brushing and flossing. If you get tooth decay or cavities, the resin won’t stick to your teeth as well.

There are a few other things you can do, too. Chewing ice and hard foods will wear down the resin, and it should be avoided as much as possible. Similarly, it is not advised to grind your teeth together. Lastly, it is recommended not to whiten your teeth, as the bonding will not whiten with the rest of your teeth. This can give you a mismatched smile, as your teeth will be whiter, and the bonding will be more yellow.
