When to Start the Orthodontics Process [At What Age?]

Orthodontics Fort Lauderdale, FL

Orthodontics is a great way to improve one’s smile and oral health. Working with a general dentist to get the process going is a good place to begin. However, it is important to first understand when the orthodontic process should actually start.

It is important to learn about when to start the orthodontic process. This information can be helpful to patients considering braces, aligners or retainers. Ultimately, consulting with a general dentist will provide the patient with a more specific timeline.

When to start the orthodontics process

Outlined below is when a general dentist recommends that the orthodontic process should begin. Keep reading to find out more!

At a young age

Most general dentists recommend that patients begin the orthodontics process at a young age. Here is why: When teeth develop and grow in, they form roots. These roots keep the tooth in place so it is anchored and strong. Once the roots are fully developed, it makes it incredibly difficult for the teeth to shift, which is why it is recommended to start early on.

There is not a set age for when orthodontics should begin, but most general dentists state that adolescence is a great age. Once all the baby teeth have fallen out and the adult teeth have begun to grow in, general dentists typically begin to evaluate the mouth for orthodontic treatment.

If the adult teeth are growing in severely crooked, then the general dentist may be able to start orthodontic treatment before all the teeth are fully grown in. If the general dentist opts for this plan, then the orthodontic piece will be adjusted accordingly as the teeth grow in.

When oral health is at risk

General dentists also recommend that the orthodontics process starts when patients show signs of bad oral health. If the teeth are severely crooked, then it puts the entire mouth at risk for oral health issues such as gum disease or tooth decay. Food can get left behind in between crooked teeth, and it can be hard to reach when brushing or flossing.

Some patients let their crooked teeth go, and they do not get them fixed. However, later in life, there may be many oral health problems that arise because of this. General dentists can administer orthodontic treatment to people who are past adolescence. However, it may require more of a time commitment. When the teeth are fully developed, it is harder for them to shift, but this does not mean that it is impossible.
